ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS
ELL students are individually assessed to best determine their course and level placement. Royal Bridge’s ELL program is in its nascent stages and students of all language ability levels are grouped in one classroom. In the future, Royal Bridge is planning to offer a Transitional Program to assist students who are almost ready for the regular program, and an Academic Strategies course to assist students newly enrolled in regular English courses.
The ELL program consists of classroom instruction in Reading, Speaking and Listening skills and in-class support in the English, Social Studies and Science classrooms. Math, P.E. and electives are regular courses.
Our ELL Teacher uses a language-in-content approach where the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking are taught/developed while supporting the students’ learning in the different subject areas. ELL teachers use a variety of resources, writing and communication activities to assist students acquire English language skills.
Students are integrated/transitioned into mainstream courses as soon as they are ready to manage the linguistic demands of the curriculum. Assessment is ongoing, and transition into age/grade appropriate courses is determined by the criteria from the BC Ministry ELL Standards.
FUTURE ELL PROGRAM GOALS
CREATE a TRANSITIONAL PROGRAM
We see the Transitional Program as a bridge between the ELL program and the regular English and Socials courses. Transitional classes combine the intensive study of English and Socials with regular curriculum content. Credit for English and Social Studies is granted upon successful completion of transitional classes. All transitional courses would follow the BC Ministry curricula which allows for an easier transition into the regular program.
CREATE an ACADEMIC STRATEGIES COURSE
We see the Academic Strategies course as being for ELLLearnerswhohavemovedoutoftheTransitionalProgramandintoregularEnglish. This course would help students who still require some assistance in reading comprehension, vocabulary expansion, and composition writing. The teacher would design the program to best support each student in this advanced English language support class.
